VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

INTERACTIVE MAP OF ACTIVE VOLCANOES

About 80% of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen close to where two tectonic plates meet. The largest, active volcano in the world is the shield volcano, Mauna Loa, in Hawaii. It is 13,677 feet above sea level. Mars has the largest known volcanoes called Olympus Mons.

A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth
When pressure builds up, eruptions occur.
Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments.
